The first digit indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against access to hazardous parts (e.g., electrical conductors, moving parts) and the ingress of solid foreign objects.

| 2 | Protection against solid objects over 12mm. (e.g. fingers) |
| 3 | Protection against solid objects over 2.5mm. (e.g. tools and wires) |

| 5 | Protection against dust - limited ingress. (No harmful deposit) |
| 6 | Protection against dust - dust tight. (Total protection) |
The second digit indicates the protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against harmful ingress of water.
